Abstract: Under the “Conservation and Upgrading of the Rural Heritage” and “Training and Information” measures of this programme, West Limerick Resources proposed to establish and administer a “Traditional Skills Conservation: Use of Lime Mortar Training Initiative ” to provide basic training to members of local communities on the subject of conservation work using lime mortar.
The “Traditional Skills Conservation: Use of Lime Mortar Training Initiative” has a number of objectives including:
1)Increase understanding of the role and complexity of conservation works, including obtaining necessary permissions and using correct materials and techniques
2)Help participants develop essential understanding of the necessary skills and knowledge required to use lime mortar in conservation projects
3)Provide groups with practical training and experience in the use of lime mortar
4)Provide training on appropriate on-going maintenance of lime mortar and stone walls
5)Raise awareness of the issues of health and safety when undertaking such work
The successful applicant will be asked to develop and deliver a practical and hands-on training programme which will address the areas outlined below. Potential Trainers are asked to use this information as a Training should address the following areas:
1)The character of lime
2)History of use of lime mortar
3)The advantages of lime over cement
4)The different types of limes and how they are produced
5)Choosing sands, aggregates and other inclusions
6)Principles of specifying lime mortars
7)Mixing lime mortars
8)Principles of good traditional masonry wall building
9)Traditional pointing methods
10)The correct use of tools and materials
11)Analysing the existing historic mortars
12)Conservation best practice
13)Health and safety issues
14)Care and protection of works and aftercare.

Total quantity or scope of tender

This initiative will be open to members of communities based in the West Limerick area. It is anticipated that those taking part in the course will be active members of the community who are currently involved with local enhancement and conservation work. It can be expected that trainees will be beginners, with no previous experience in this type of work.

The practical hands-on course will take place in Mungret Graveyard over a five day period using repair and rebuild of its historic surrounding walls as a training ground (Necessary permissions are being sought). In the course of the practical work the trainer will be expected to inform trainees of the historic use of lime. It is estimated that the courses will cater for up to 12 participants. It is anticipated that this will be an uncertified course but will provide participants with essential practical skills which they can implement in their own communities.

3 Conditions for Participation

3.1

Minimum standards and qualification required

Experience: Tenders should include details of previous experience in this area of work along with examples of such work. Trainer should provide evidence of the following:

*Hands-on experience in conservation works

*Past experience teaching the use of lime mortar to groups

Qualifications: Details of the professional and other qualifications of individuals who will undertake the work should be outlined clearly. Trainer should provide evidence of the following:

*Qualification in traditional stone wall construction

*Knowledge of conservation best practice

*Knowledge of the legislation and statutory guidance governing works to historic structures

*Knowledge of safety, health and welfare at work legislation with regard to the preparation and use of lime mortar

Additional Information

Trainers are required to provide all necessary training material including overhead projectors, flip charts and handouts as required.

Training material e.g. lime mortar, stone, suitable venue and necessary permissions will be provided by West Limerick Resources in cooperation with Limerick County Council

Project implementation is subject to funding availability.

Please note the lowest tender may not be chosen

Should your tender be unsuccessful West Limerick Resources is not liable for any cost incurred for preparation and/or submission.

Participants should be covered under public liability insurance against accidents. It would be essential that this insurance covers the type of manual work that will be involved.
